New set-up adds extra state champions

AUSTIN — The University Interscholastic League has announced a new split bracket for the high school sports playoffs. This means that there will now be two state champions per classification in volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball and softball.

The new playoff formula, already in use for 6A football, will now be applied to 2A-6A volleyball, 1A-6A basketball, 4A-6A soccer, 1A-6A baseball and 1A-6A softball.

The playoffs will now be divided into Division I and Division II brackets. In this setup, the top four teams make the playoffs, with the two largest schools, by enrollment, placed in the Division I bracket, while the two smaller schools, by enrollment, are placed in the Division II bracket.

Additionally, the new playoff set up will reduce the number of playoff games from seven to six in all five sports.

The biggest change is that there will now be two state champions in all five sports, similar to football. This will raise the total number of state champions from 36 to 69.
