Ticket prices to the 2024 Copa América tournament, which includes games in Austin on Sunday and next Tuesday , are up 59% compared to 2016, according to data from Vivid Seats.

Why it matters: Experts say prices are driven by demand to see soccer icon — and Inter Miami star — Lionel Messi , who is playing for his native Argentina.

By the numbers: As of this week, tickets to see Argentina, the 2022 World Cup champions, have been going for an average of $414.

    • The average price of a ticket for the 2016 event was $143. This week, it was $227.
    • The average price for Team USA's matches is $165.

Yes, but: Neither Argentina nor the U.S. is scheduled to play in Austin.

    • Venezuela takes on Jamaica on Sunday at Q2 Stadium.
    • Paraguay plays Costa Rica on Tuesday at Q2.
    • As of Thursday afternoon, tickets for the Sunday game ranged from roughly $228 to $800 on Ticketmaster . The Tuesday game had cheaper tickets, starting at around $85 .

Reality check: The high ticket prices are being blamed for half-empty stadiums at some Copa América matches.

The intrigue: 2016 was the last time the U.S. hosted the tournament, which comprises 10 teams from South American nations and six North and Central American sides.
