The Texas Longhorns have positioned themselves especially well as a long-term power as they transition to the SEC. The blue-chip ratio is favorable for Steve Sarkisian's Longhorns in 2024 and, importantly, 2025.
See why the 2025 Longhorns recruiting class is on pace to allow Texas to get back into the CFP in the future.
Texas Longhorns 2025 Recruiting Class Blue Chip Ratio
Anchored by 4-star QB KJ Lacey and possibly adding several 5-star receivers still, the Longhorns' 2025 recruiting class is one of the most encouraging in the nation. 13 commitments are already on the books. 62% of them are either 4- or 5-star prospects.
Since its inception in 2013, the Blue-Chip Ratio has garnered attention from prominent broadcast networks, attracting significant interest from elite coaches and collegiate athletics administrators. This metric has also played a role in reviving the EA Sports College Football video game. Despite its simplicity, the formula is dependable for identifying the top 10% of collegiate football teams with a legitimate opportunity to win the championship title.
For a college football team to secure the national championship, it is critical that it accumulates a greater number of four- and five-star recruits—commonly known as "Blue Chips"—compared to two- and three-star recruits across the four most recent recruiting classes.
Since 2011, every championship team has had a winning ratio of at least 52%. Many teams have surpassed a 70% winning rate, indicating that only a select few are truly in contention for the title even before the season starts. While this may be disheartening for a ton of fan bases, it's the reality that talent matters.
Texas Longhorns 2024 Blue Chip Ratio
The Longhorns are in a good position for the 2024 season despite overhauling its roster due to NFL departures. A whopping 72% of its roster is considered a blue chipper, which only trails six programs. Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Oregon, and Oklahoma are ahead of Texas.
Texas is still chasing some of the other blue blood programs for 2025. As of publishing, the colleges that boast at least a 50% blue chip ratio within their 2025 recruitment class encompass Florida State (100%), Oregon (93%), LSU (92%), Georgia (88%), Ohio State (77%), and Alabama (78%), along with a few other teams not usually contenders for the championship.
