The Austin Police Department on Wednesday identified a man who police believe fatally stabbed his father at a condo community in South Austin Monday evening.

Austin police officers responded at 5:39 p.m. Monday to multiple calls of a stabbing in the front yard of a residence at Cannon Ridge Homes, 6715 Windrift Way, a news release said. A caller reported that someone was bleeding.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services arrived and found a victim — later identified as James Lerond, 51 — lying in the street and began life-saving measures. The man was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m., police Sgt. Lee Knouse said in a briefing on Monday.

Officers located footprints leading to the garage of the home and into the living room, the news release said. When officers entered to check welfare, they found another man, later identified as Hayden Lerond, 22, lying on the floor with blood on his knees. Hayden Lerond had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation showed that Hayden Lerond had stabbed his father, James Lerond, causing his death, the news release said.

Hayden Lerond was booked into the Travis County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder, Travis County records show. He was being held in the jail on a $200,000 bond as of Friday morning.

The case is being investigated as Austin’s 30th homicide of 2024, the news release said.
