    Man dies after being struck by train in South Austin; police investigating

    Police are investigating the death of a man who was struck by a train in South Austin on Tuesday night, the Austin Police Department said at a news conference.

    Authorities received an urgent check welfare call at 10:19 p.m., indicating a person had been hit by a train near in the 1700 block of West Stassney Lane, near Menchaca Road, officer Austin Zarling said. The man was pronounced deceased about 30 minutes later, he said. Police did not identify or provide an age range for the man.

    Zarling did not know whether it was a Union Pacific train that had struck the man.

    Police are not investigating it as a suspicious death, but Zarling said anyone with information should contact the homicide tip line at 512-477-3588.

    The death is also being investigated by the Travis County medical examiner's office.
