On Friday night, música mexicana band Grupo Firme surprised the crowd at their show in Austin with an unexpected special guest: Demi Lovato. Yes, you read that right. Lovato hit the stage with frontman Eduin Caz to duet their upcoming single, “Chula.”

Mid-set, Lovato, who is on the heels of back-to-back rock projects, joined the “Ya Supérame” group for the debut of their Spanglish, dance-pop collaboration, out Aug. 15. The track, which hears Lovato return to her pop roots, also laces some of Firme’s Mexican music elements.

Lovato teased the song on social media earlier this week after being asked for new music by a fan. “Say you’re ready but I bet you not,” she captioned the post , quoting the song’s lyrics. In response, Firme’s Instagram account wrote “ ” in the comments, hinting at the collab.

The new song is a massive step for Firme, who was rumored to split in 2023 after Caz announced that he was retiring from music. He retracted the decision earlier this year and reunited with the group, which is halfway through their La Última Peda tour . The band has stops left in cities such as Las Vegas, San Jose, and Los Angeles through early November.

When chatting with Rolling Stone in 2022, Caz said the band was open to experimenting with new genres. “If it doesn’t work, at least we tried,” he said at the time. “I’ll go home with a smile on my face because I like challenges.” Caz has stayed true to his word, joining pop star Thalía on “Te Va Doler” and Mexican reggaetonero Dani Flow on “Domperi” earlier this year.

As for Lovato, she joined Slash on a cover of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” after releasing a reimagining of her pop hits on Revamped in 2023 and her rock album Holy Fvck the year prior. “Chula” isn’t Lovato’s first foray into music in Spanish. She joined Luis Fonsi for “ Échame La Culpa ” in 2017.
