According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), a tanker truck was involved in a crash around 5 a.m. with another vehicle. The impact launched the tanker through a guardrail and down a hillside.

The tanker was hauling a tar-like substance that goes down underneath asphalt. The chemical was leaking into a small creek, so HAZMAT was called in for a cleanup.

The spill has since been contained, and the Environmental Protection Agency is working with the cleanup company to remove the product, according to Austintown Fire Chief Andy Frost. The tanker is no longer leaking, he said.

The OSHP did not know the cause of the crash but did say a person was hurt and taken to the hospital.

Traffic is moving again in the area, but the tanker won’t be removed until Monday.
