Community members from in and around Avon rallied to raise at least $6,000 to pay for surgery for a young dog who was thrown from a vehicle on Tuesday.

Avon Animal Control Officer Angela Grano says the one-year-old Lhasa Apso now known as Amelia Airheart "pulled through" surgery on Wednesday. Grano is optimistic about her recovery.

“Two young girls witnessed this dog being thrown from a moving vehicle in the Petco parking lot,” says Grano. “They begged their parents to stop, and they found her on the ground, immobile.”

Grano took Amelia to the vet, who diagnosed her with a pelvis broken in four places.

On Facebook , Grano reached out for donations to pay for the operation, and the public came through.

Grano and Avon police are now looking for the driver of the vehicle from which the pet was thrown, believed to be a blue SUV. A $5,000 reward is being offered by Desmond’s Army for information leading to those responsible.

The case remains a mystery. “Clearly, she was cared for by somebody, she was recently groomed,” according to Grano, “so we find the whole thing very perplexing.”

Additional donations for Amelia’s care are being accepted in the form of cash or checks to Avon Pet Pantry, 11 Arch Rd., Avon.
