A Texan drives an EV and doesn't like it

I drove an electric vehicle for the first time recently on a road trip to Cooperstown, New York.

    • I'm sorry to report I didn't love it.

Why it matters: There are 314,000 miles of public roads in Texas.

    • The average fully-charged EV can travel about 300 miles before needing hours, in many cases, to refuel.

State of drive: I rented a car in New York City for my recent trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame , which fell on the same weekend as the CrowdStrike outage .

    • That left me with one option: an electric vehicle.

Reality check: An unplanned road trip in an electric vehicle might not be the fairest assessment of what it's like going gasless, but it was a crash course in navigating complicated charging systems and mapping out stops.

Context: I was given a Kia Niro, which can go about 240 miles when fully charged. Unfortunately, I couldn't set out for my 200-mile trip to Cooperstown from Queens right away, because the car was only 70% charged at first.

    • Using a supercharger for 30 minutes nearly topped off the "tank."
    • But once the battery dropped below 50% charged, the stress started to set in. I arrived at my destination with just 10 miles of charge to spare.
    • It took about eight hours on a Level 2 charger to "fill up."

Key gripes: I was slow to acclimate to the "gas" pedal, which required constant pressure to keep the car moving — no coasting here. It was counterintuitive to stay on the pedal even while approaching a stop sign, red light or slowed traffic.

    • As a passenger prone to motion sickness, the lack of glide is jarring and nauseating.

The bottom line: An EV probably makes sense for people with short commutes and houses fit with chargers. But for the rest of us? I'll stick with my Honda Civic.

Go deeper: Pack up the electric car, honey! We're hitting the road
