The Black Food and Wine Experience , a California event that showcases Black entrepreneurs, chefs and other hospitality talent, is coming to Detroit next month.

The big picture: Aminah " Chef Mimi " Robinson-Briscoe founded the event in Oakland in 2016. Now she is expanding to Detroit in partnership with Dan Gilbert-owned real estate company Bedrock, with a slate of events in Bedrock-owned buildings.

State of play: The Black Food and Wine Experience was created to address the lack of diversity in the food and beverage industry, according to Robinson-Briscoe as reported by Axios. The expansion into Detroit represents the first step into a new state, with plans for two more locations in the coming years.

    • "I feel like Detroit is a cousin of Oakland. There's a lot of similarities, a lot of pride, a lot of revolutionary ideas and creatives," Robinson-Briscoe says.
    • Expected local speakers include Chef Quiana Rice of Cooking with Que , W.E. Da'Cruz of the Mushroom Angel Co. and Jon Kent from Sanctuary Farms .

If you go: Tickets are available for the Sept. 12-14 event series taking place during the Detroit Month of Design .

    • It starts with a kickoff reception from 7-9pm Sept. 12 at the Book Tower for chefs, business owners, winemakers, "culinary enthusiasts" and others to learn more about Detroit's food and beverage culture and history, according to a news release. ($67)
    • There's a Black food and beverage summit from noon-4pm Sept. 13 at One Campus Martius with networking and speeches on empowerment, economic advancement and entrepreneurship. ($25)
    • It caps off with a Grand Tasting event showcasing food and drink samples from more than 30 local businesses from 7-11pm Sept. 14 at State Savings Bank. Attendees are asked to wear cocktail attire with sneakers. ($150)
