Local travel is on the rise, according to new data from Airbnb.

The big picture: More travelers are opting to stay closer to home, with Airbnb reporting a surge in bookings within a 300-mile radius — roughly a tank of gas — from where people live.

    • "Local travel is growing twice as fast as long-distance travel on Airbnb," a statement from the home rental company reads.

Zoom in: Texas is among the top 10 states for in-state travel, according to Airbnb's study.

    • Houstonians traveled to Austin, Galveston, San Antonio, Dallas and Corpus Christi more than anywhere else in the last year, the study found.

Driving the news: Labor Day is around the corner, and it's going to be less hot soon.

    • Meanwhile, gas prices in Texas are dropping, according to AAA . As of Monday, the average price for regular gas in Houston was $2.96, down from $3.09 last month.

The intrigue: Houstonians really like black tiny homes in the woods. According to Airbnb, the Getaway cabins in Navasota and the Hill Country were two of the three most popular listings for people from Houston.

    • The third was this cozy home less than a mile from the beach in Galveston.
