Three passengers were killed after they were thrown from a vehicle on N.C. 903 on Saturday west of Ayden, the State Highway Patrol said, and the driver of the vehicle also died after jumping into the roadway to stop traffic.

At 11:48 p.m. troopers responded to N.C. 903 near N.C. 102 in southern Pitt County. The patrol said that a vehicle driven by Suhziah Spruill, 22, of Snow Hill was traveling north on the highway at a high rate of speed when it went off the right side of the road and collided with a guardrail.

The patrol said five passengers in the vehicle were ejected by the collision. They were all unrestrained.

Three of those passengers, Nykwon Coppedged, 22, of Snow Hill, Zykhia Connor, 18, of Grifton and Amoni Spruill, 20, of Farmville, were killed. Two others, Chasity Kittrell, 20, and Aliana Spruill, 21, both of Snow Hill, were transported to ECU Health Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A Greene County employee said that Connor was a student at the Greene County Alternative Education Center and a former student at Greene Central High School.

After the wreck, Spruill jumped into the roadway to stop traffic and was struck by a Kia Forte. Spruill died on the scene.

The driver of the Kia will not be charged, the patrol said.
