Police involved in shooting at Tempe mobile home park

A person was shot during an incident involving police officers Friday morning at a Tempe mobile home park, Tempe police officials posted to social media.

Officers responded to a police shooting in the area of Southern Avenue and 48th Street in The Meadows mobile home park, according to details posted shortly before 8 a.m. on X , formerly known as Twitter.

Around 7 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call from a 74-year-old woman who believed her 55-year-old son had shot and killed her husband, according to authorities.

Officials said the woman provided a description of her son to authorities and reported that she last saw her husband, 77, "on the floor and unresponsive" inside their home.

When officers arrived at the scene, they surrounded the residence, calling for the occupants of the home to exit.

Shortly afterward, the son emerged from the home with "a gun in his hand," officials said.

After briefly putting the gun to his head, the son then pointed the weapon at the officers.

In response, a veteran officer from the department's patrol division fired his weapon at the son, officials said.

After providing immediate medical aid to the son, he was then rushed to the hospital.

The son is now out of surgery and continues to receive medical attention, officials said.

Authorities then did a sweep of the home and found the husband, who officials confirmed as the son’s stepfather, dead in the kitchen, according to officials.

Tempe police are now treating the incident as a homicide, with the Mesa Police Department investigating the officer-involved shooting portion of the incident.

Officials continue to investigate what led to the shooting.

The officer involved in the shooting, who has over 16 years with the Tempe Police Department, is currently on leave while investigations are underway per the department's policy, according to authorities.

"While this is still a very active scene we can confirm no officers were injured and the suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting is an adult male," officials posted about 9:15 a.m. in an update on social media.
