The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest has published a final environmental impact statement that studies 22 proposed mining operations on the forest near Baker City and Sumpter.

Shaun McKinney, Wallowa-Whitman supervisor, has approved a draft decision authorizing new operating plans for 20 placer mining sites. The decision doesn’t authorize lode (underground) mining, which was proposed on two claims. One of the 22 claims, also a lode claim, is not part of the decision because the claim has been closed, according to the Wallowa-Whitman.
