BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A free hygiene item giveaway is happening Tuesday for residents affected by the water shutoff near Shirley Lane Elementary school.

Nearly 200 homes spend several days without running water last month in the area of Weedpatch, Fairfax and Shirley Lane.

The giveaway is happening at 2 p.m. at Shirley Lane Elementary School. Residents can expect to receive free socks, undergarments and boxer briefs.

The event is being hosted by Dignity Health Department of Special Needs and Community Outreach. According to organizers, the items are meant for community members to get by while they still wait to do laundry at home.

“We got carrots, we got apples, we got taco meat, we got even coloring books for the kids today so a wide spread of stuff just to get them back on their feet while they’re dealing with the circumstances that have been dealt,” CPKK PR and Advocacy Manager Savannah Oates said.

Resident Zeirrin Aranda said she was grateful for the help. “It means a lot because it means that they actually care that we’re going through this and they’re not just leaving us behind or letting us deal with it on our own.”
