BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Another heat wave rolls through the city of Bakersfield, with temperatures climbing closer to the 118 degree record set more than a century ago.

Sunday brought a high temperature of 115 degrees.

John Duvall has been homeless for eight years. He says the heat is becoming unbearable for both him, his friend who goes by “Bird,” and their dog, Buddy. Duvall is only able to get water from the Starbucks near Mount Vernon Avenue.

“I can’t go in none of the stores up there, only ’cause I’m homeless,” said Duvall.

Drew Molina asks for money and food on Mount Vernon Ave. and Columbus St. Molina holds a positive attitude about the situation, especially when it comes to living outside in the extreme heat.

“I just try to get by, drink a lot of water,” said Molina. “That’s it, drink a lot of water.”

The cooling centers in Bakersfield can provide relief for those who choose to go, but Molina says going can be a hassle.

“It’s more easier out here than going through all that, I just get by where I’m at,” said Molina.

For others, like for Robert Hobbs, it’s an issue of finding the cooling centers. Hobbs says getting into homeless shelters have also been hit and miss. He moves from spot to spot, panhandling to get what he needs.

“People give me stuff to drink, you know, keep me hydrated,” said Hobbs. “It’s rough out here, it really is.”

For Molina, living in these conditions makes him believe in a simple philosophy.

“You got to do what you’ve got to do, you know what I mean?” said Molina. “You’ve gotta survive.”

According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature over the next week is expected to be 110 degrees.
