Trader Joe’s expanding into neighboring pet store, adding 5,000 extra square feet

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The only Trader Joe’s in Bakersfield is on its way to become a whole lot bigger.

Trader Joe’s, located at Town and Country Village Shopping Center will be taking over Village Pet Market next door. The expansion project will be adding a total of 5,000 extra square feet to the grocery store.

While the grocery chain store will not be going anywhere, the pet store will be moving to a different location in the same shopping center.

The project will be starting in the next couple of months. The Trader Joe’s located at the corner of Stockdale Highway and Coffee Road is constantly busy because it is well known for its cheap products and specialty items.

Shoppers say the store has become overcrowded due to its popularity.

“Sometimes traffic can get a little congested and so in finding out that they’re going to expand, I’m very happy,” Trader Joe’s shopper, Evelyne Thomas said.

Brokers of the project don’t expect to close Trader Joe’s or Village Pet during the expansion. They expect to finish the project in early 2025.
