New York’s attorney general and the local affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union are both separately suing a New York county after it again banned transgender women from playing on female sports teams.
Sound Bites: Sharks spotted off Long Island beaches
Two shark sightings have been reported off the coast of Long Island, bringing the number of shark sightings to five since Thursday. The Town of Hempstead responded by adding five new drones to a fleet monitoring beaches for sharks and training 12 more staff members to operate them. Water temperature plays a role in determining the number of sightings, with colder water near shore and warmer water offshore attracting sharks and menhaden.

Long Island beach closed after confirmed shark sighting
Swimming was temporarily suspended Monday afternoon at Lido Beach in Hempstead after a confirmed shark sighting. Hempstead officials said lifeguards confirmed a sighting of a shark roughly seven-feet in length swimming 25 feet from the shore off Town Park. Swimmers were evacuated from the water and red flags were posted.
