Highlighting History: Emancipation Day declared in Tupelo
TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) – July 15 has been officially declared Emancipation Day in the City of Tupelo. The proclamation, which was made Monday night, was read aloud by Ward 4 Councilwoman Nettie Davis following a program from Dr. Carl B. Mack about why July 15 is an important part of local Black history.
Highlighting History: 160th anniversary of the Battle of Tupelo
TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) – Sunday marked 160 years since war came to Tupelo. The 1864 battle in an area once known as Harrisburg lasted two days, ended in a Union victory, and ended Confederate attempts to cut off supplies to Major General William Tecumseh Sherman who was moving on Atlanta, Georgia.
