Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson fits on a short list of names of those in the running to be the best dual-threat quarterback in NFL history. Jackson, Russell Wilson, Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, and Cam Newton all built legacies on their ability to win with their legs as well as their arms.

Speaking on the “4th and 1” podcast in a clip posted on Twitter/X on July 4, Newton was asked if he believed he was the best dual threat in NFL history.

Instead of beating his chest, he pointed the finger at Jackson. Here’s how he put it ( transcribed by Raven Country ):

“Well, Lamar’s style is a little different than mine. He got big play [potential], any play. Yes, he got speed that I never had, and he’s just electric. And then I played the game more… powerful. Yeah I can run, but I might probably get caught. [Michael] Vick, Lamar, they ain’t getting caught,” he said.

Newton was known to be more of a bruiser. At his peak, the quarterback wasn’t afraid to beat people with his size and frame. In 2015, he was able to utilize his gifts to get to Super Bowl 50, where he lost to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Lamar Jackson can pass Michael Vick in multiple career categories in 2024

However, in terms of comparisons, there was a time when Jackson and Vick were like twins. Both were able to throw but, more uniquely, both were able to burst with their speed. Early in Jackson’s career, most expected the quarterback to follow in Vick’s footsteps for better and worse.

The downfall of Vick was that his mobile style of play led to more hits, which led to more injuries. Vick played just six full-ish seasons in the league. He also struggled to win in the playoffs, winning just two playoff games in his career.

Jackson, meanwhile, has flirted with the injury bug but it hasn’t been his downfall. The quarterback missed a month in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. However, unlike Vick, he bounced back. In 2023, he won an MVP and brought his team to the AFC Championship Game, pushing him well past Vick.

Now, according to Pro Football Reference , Jackson is on pace to pass him in career touchdown passes this year (133 to 125). Jackson also has a shot to pass Vick in total rushing yards as well (6,109 to 5,208).

Put simply, Lamar Jackson is on deck to elevate himself further toward being the unchallenged statistical zenith of dual-threat quarterbacks.
