Baltimore Ravens legend ranked as the 99th-best athlete of the century with confusing logic

Baltimore Ravens legendary safety Ed Reed is certainly one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history.

In fact, he's one of the greatest athletes of the 21st century, according to ESPN.

ESPN ranked the 100 best athletes of this century , and Reed came in at 99.

While it's certainly an honor for the Hall of Famer, the logic with the ranking is a bit confusing.

ESPN's Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley called Reed "the ultimate defensive game changer of his generation" before listing some of Reed's accomplishments during his 13-year career.

Maybe it's just us, but calling a player "the ultimate game-changer" and then ranking him toward the bottom of the list sets a high precedent for whichever players come next (ESPN has only unveiled 100-76 of the list so far).

Reed's resumé is overwhelming: nine Pro Bowl selections, five All-Pro selections, 2004 Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl champ, and Hall of Famer.

Reed's 2004 season is one for the ages. The then-26-year-old, third-year safety had 78 tackles, 2 sacks, 9 interceptions, one pick-six (that went for 106 yards), three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and another touchdown scored off of a fumble.

But perhaps the greatest testament to Reed's skill came in the 2007 behind-the-scenes video of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick discussing how to game-plan for Reed while marveling at his film.
