Ravens QB Lamar Jackson Prepping For Possible Legal Battle With Troy Aikman

The Week 7 “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have just got a lot more interesting because of the potential legal feud between Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and “MNF” commentator Troy Aikman.

According to a report from ESPN , Jackson is challenging Aikman’s trademark of the No. 8 through a complaint filed to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Jackson alleges that Aikman’s use of “EIGHT” on products including apparel, bags, and beverages could potentially confuse and/or deceive consumers who may not know if they’re purchasing products from Jackson or Aikman’s company.

FL101, a company of which Aikman is listed as a director in SEC filings, was named in Jackson’s complaint because it owns nine trademark applications of “EIGHT” for a number of consumer products.

Jackson, a two-time NFL MVP, maintains that Aikman’s “EIGHT” is too similar to several of the trademarks he’s already applied for including “Era 8,” “Era 8 by Lamar Jackson,” and “You 8 yet?” and Jackson’s attorney is arguing that Aikman’s trademark is too similar in “sound, appearance, connotation and commercial impression.”

“Jackson has expended considerable time, effort, and expense in promoting, advertising, and popularizing the number 8 in connection with his personality and fame and is well-known by this number due to his notoriety and fame, along with his promotion of this number in his trademarks and in media coverage,” the appeal reads.

FL101 and Aikman have until Aug. 18 to formally respond to the federal trademark office.
