Orioles Strengthen Rotation With Acquisition Of Zach Eflin

    By Annalise Mason,

In a significant move to enhance their pitching staff, the Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-hander Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays. This strategic trade, completed on Friday, sees Baltimore sending a trio of prospects to Tampa Bay in exchange for the experienced starter. The addition of Eflin is a timely reinforcement for the Orioles' rotation, especially given recent injuries to key pitchers.

    Eflin Joins A Rejuvenated Rotation

Zach Eflin's arrival bolsters an Orioles rotation that has been hit hard by injuries. With Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells all out for the season due to UCL surgeries, Baltimore was in desperate need of a reliable arm. Eflin, 30, fits the bill perfectly. He will join fellow right-handers Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez at the top of the Orioles' rotation.

Eflin's track record speaks volumes. In 2023, he was among the American League's top starters, finishing sixth in Cy Young Award voting after posting a career-best 3.50 ERA over 31 starts in his first season with the Rays. This year, he's maintained solid form with a 4.09 ERA through 19 starts.

    Immediate And Future Impact

One of the standout aspects of this acquisition is that Eflin is under contract through the end of 2025. This provides immediate help and adds stability to the rotation for the next two seasons. Considering the uncertain timelines for Bradish, Means, and Wells, and the fact that Corbin Burnes is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, having Eflin on board is a crucial long-term benefit.

Eflin's career numbers are impressive. He holds a 4.26 ERA in 177 career games (165 starts) over nine MLB seasons. After spending his first seven seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Eflin signed with the Rays as a free agent before the 2023 campaign. Orioles fans can take comfort in knowing they no longer have to face him, as Eflin has a 3.00 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP in five career starts against Baltimore.

A Smart Trade Without Losing Top Prospects

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trade is that the Orioles managed to secure Eflin without parting with any of their top nine prospects. The package sent to Tampa Bay included a pair of 2023 Draft picks: second-rounder Mac Horvath and Competitive Balance Round B selection Cade Kuehler. Kuehler, a pitcher, is notable for being the only arm selected by the

Orioles on the first day of a Draft since Mike Elias became general manager in 2019.

This careful maneuvering ensures that the Orioles maintain their bright future while addressing a pressing current need. The Orioles' front office deserves credit for balancing immediate competitiveness with long-term planning.

    More Moves On The Horizon?

The trade for Eflin was the second deal made by the Orioles on Friday. Earlier in the day, they traded for right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache. The Orioles' activity suggests they might not be done yet. With the Trade Deadline approaching, there's still potential for additional moves to further strengthen both the rotation and bullpen. Additionally, the team could seek a right-handed bat after parting with Austin Hays.
