Baltimore Orioles Are Getting Roasted for Costly Error on Routine Pop Fly

The Baltimore Orioles (61-42) were set to escape with a scoreless second inning after allowing baserunners to reach second and third base. With two outs, the team made a costly mistake.

San Diego Padres catcher and No. 9 hitter Kyle Higashioka lofted a routine pop fly just outside the infield dirt. Then came the chaos.

Baltimore shortstop Gunnar Henderson called off third baseman Ramon Urias to claim the fielding opportunity. Assuming the ball was in his territory, Urias stayed put to haul in the baseball.

When the ball dropped within reach, the two infielders collided, only to see the baseball hit the ground.

The play isn't one you usually see at the professional level, but one that got the better of Baltimore on Saturday. Rather than leave the inning with a 0-0 tie, the Orioles would allow two runs.

Fox Sports' MLB account took to Twitter to roast the Orioles, as did several MLB fans. It was a rare lowlight in the team's impressive 2024 season.

The play disrupted an otherwise impressive showing from Baltimore pitcher Dean Kramer. The Orioles starter was only credited with one earned run in six innings pitched.

The Orioles will complete their series with the Padres on Sunday. They'll hope to maintain a division lead over the New York Yankees with a win in their series finale against the Padres.
