A critical connection for the Baltimore Ravens seems to be blossoming

The Baltimore Ravens offense could take a leap in 2024 if Lamar Jackson and Rashod Bateman can get on the same page a little more often.

Through three seasons, it's been a struggle for the duo. Bateman, a 2021 first-round pick, has put up pedestrian numbers while struggling with injuries . However, when he's been on the field, Jackson seemingly hasn't looked his way very often.

Throughout the offseason, both players have talked about the importance of developing that chemistry this season.

So far, in training camp, they seem to be making good on improving their connection.

Over the weekend, ESPN's Jamison Hensley reported that during an 11-on-11 situational scrimmage, Jackson and Bateman connected four times for 61 yards, including two 20-yard receptions.

Ravens wide receivers coach Greg Lewis said it was "great" to see Jackson and Bateman developing their "rapport."

The connection continued on Monday, with Jackson completing five passes to Bateman during a scrimmage. One of Bateman's catches was a 15-yard leaping catch for a touchdown over two defenders.

Bateman, however, appeared to injure his midsection on the play. It's unclear the extent of the injury.

Ravens safety Ar'Darius Washington also praised Bateman's performances on Monday.

"Bate's going to be explosive this year," Washington said. "He's going to make a lot of plays for us, for sure."

It's a critical year for Bateman, who signed a two-year extension this offseason — one he admitted caught him by surprise . So, while his financial future is secure, with the extension also comes expectations. Head coach John Harbaugh said earlier in training camp that the team expects Bateman to go out and perform like a top wide receiver.

Statistically, Bateman doesn't have a high bar to clear to have a career year — he's never topped 515 yards or 3 touchdowns in a season. Bateman, however, has always been praised by teammates for his technique and his route-running. He has at times looked the part of a stud wide receiver, even if the numbers haven't followed.

It would be huge for the Ravens offense if Bateman could become a reliable threat in the passing game, which would only open up things for players like Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews, and Derrick Henry.
