Who has the edge in AL East, Yankees or Orioles?

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (99) gestures to his dugout following his solo home run in the fifth inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Through Monday's games, the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are tied for the American League East lead with 67-46 records and 49 regular-season games remaining.

Both teams have heated up and cooled down over the same stretches this season, so the division race has stayed tight. The remaining schedule favors the Yankees, whom FanDuel pegs to win the division for the second time in three seasons.

In August, the Orioles will play 17 of their 24 games against teams with a .500 record or better. This includes a three-series stretch against the playoff-contending New York Mets, Houston Astros, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Baltimore is 40-29 against teams with winning records.

The Orioles' schedule eases slightly in September. They will play 12 games against teams with winning records, including a crucial series against the Yankees. Overall, 29 of their last 49 games are against teams above .500.

The Yankees , meanwhile, only have five games against teams currently above .500 in August. However, they play 17 games in September against teams with winning records.

Like Baltimore, New York has enjoyed success against winning teams (48-33 record). Less than half of its remaining schedule is against teams currently under .500.

The worry for Baltimore is the same as all season: pitching.

The Orioles acquired Zach Eflin and Trevor Rogers at the trade deadline, but Baltimore doesn't have a dominant rotation. In two starts, Eflin has pitched solidly, but Rogers pitched terribly in his first start with his new team, allowing six hits, five runs and three walks in 4.1 innings.

For the Yankees, untimely bad pitching and hitting have raised concerns.

The lineup became slightly deeper with the addition of outfielder/third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the trade deadline. Still, catcher Austin Wells, second baseman Gleyber Torres and shortstop Anthony Volpe must play better.

In August, New York is expected to get back first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who hasn't played since mid-June because of a right arm fracture, and starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt. Rizzo's play underwhelmed before his injury, but Schmidt pitched well (5-3, 2.52 ERA) before a right lat strain sidelined him in late May.

New York has a golden opportunity over the next month to beat teams below .500 and potentially build a sizeable lead over Baltimore before the teams meet in a September series. The Orioles have won six of 10 games against New York this season.

If Baltimore plays well against the best teams, this divisional race could be decided on the last day of the season.

Buckle up, Yankees and Orioles fans, because this could be a wild ride.
