An ideal day to help leave worry behind
A perfect day for me begins like this: I sit on my small balcony, surrounded by a garden of potted plants. I call it “my garden” because its size fits into my life. Because when the morning light lays itself over the plants so that the new growth sparkles brighter than the undergrowth, for about 15 shining minutes I don’t think about anything except what is most important to me, and that’s the definition of a garden. Because leaving worry behind is not easy for me and never has been. ...
City council approves ban on backyard breeders, private animal sales
The Edmonds City Council Tuesday night approved a ban on the deliberate breeding and sale of companion animals in the city limits. The measure, championed by first-term Councilmember Jenna Nand, is patterned after similar ordinances in the cities of Bothell and Everett. It was endorsed by the Lynnwood-based Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which said that nearly 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters every year and that overpopulation in shelters leads to the euthanasia of approximately 1 million healthy dogs and cats annually.

History: What were marriage bars?
In previous articles I mentioned that several legendary Edmonds educators including Frances Anderson, Joyce Koerner and Adrienne Caspers never married, possibly due to the marriage bars that were in place. After reading the articles, several people asked me, what was the marriage bar? What was the reasoning or justification behind...

Seattle's minimum wage compromise is ending. Restaurants are worried
Ten years ago, when Seattle passed its first-in-the-nation $15 minimum wage, a lot of small businesses were concerned. So the law carved out an exception that let some small employers count tips and other reimbursement. That compromise will expire in January, and some restaurant owners say it could cause big problems. We’ll hear why from restaurant owners Yenvy Pham, Amy Fair Gunnar and Eric Banh, plus analysis of how we got here from Seattle Times reporter David Kroman.
