WIU Union President Responds to Announcement of Future Layoffs
“This new administration needs to strengthen and guide the university forward instead of gutting the quality of education.”. during the Western Illinois University (WIU) Faculty Senate meeting, Interim President Kristi Mindrup announced that the university intends to layoff an undetermined number of contingent and tenure/tenure track faculty and academic support professionals. Details will not be available until after a scheduled emergency Board of Trustees meeting on August 6. The layoffs will be in addition to the 35 contingent faculty who were laid off in June.

WIU Summer Camp Shows Off Opportunities for Rural Students
Underserved youth were given an opportunity to develop their interest in enrolling in higher education at Western Illinois University in mid-July. High school students from school districts in Peoria, Monmouth, Beardstown and Macomb attended the Addressing Equity Gaps Among Rural Students summer camp at WIU, a project funded by the Department of Education’s Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development Program (RPED). The camp was held July 16-17.
Western Illinois Offering Online Master of Arts in Sociology
The Western Illinois University Sociology department is expanding its reach by introducing a new online program. Starting this Fall 2024 semester, WIU will offer an online Master of Arts program in Sociology, which will mirror the current in-person program. The program will have three exit options: thesis, internship and non-thesis.
School of Ag to Host Field Day Aug. 8
"Finding where you fit in Organic Agriculture" is the theme of Western Illinois University’s 2024 Allison Organic Research and Demonstration Farm field day, slated for Thursday, Aug. 8. The field day will start at 9 a.m. in the Dakin Farm shop with presentations followed by a complimentary lunch at noon featuring local farm products. The field day will conclude with plot tours and equipment demonstrations from 1:15-3 p.m. at the Allison Farm.
