STAFFORD – A 24-year-old man is dead after a two-car crash on Route 72 Saturday evening, police said.

The crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Route 72 near Mill Creek Road. According to police, a 26-year-old Barnegat man was driving east on the highway in a 2018 Subaru when a 2023 Chevrolet Corvette, driven by 24-year-old Kevin Scoda from Edison, collided with him.

As a result, Scoda’s car lost control, veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole. The car then caught fire.

Police said that nearby citizens helped Scoda out of the car before emergency services arrived. He was then transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center where he died from his injuries, police said.

During investigation, traffic was diverted off Route 72 eastbound for about two hours.

The crash is currently under investigation by Officer Justin Pascale. If anyone witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage, they are urged to contact 609-597-1189 ext. 8436 or email jpascale@staffordpolice.org.
