Sigourney Community Sends Savage Softball and Baseball Teams To State With Special Event
Excitement for high school sports has reached a fever pitch in Sigourney. The community is gathering Sunday for a special event to send the Savage boys and girls of Summer off to their respective State Tournaments next week. The Sigourney baseball team is making their first State Tournament appearance in school history. The No. 8 Savages advanced after beating No. 2 Burlington Notre Dame last week 4-2 in the Class 1A Substate 6 championship game, the 300th win in head coach Lee Crawford’s career. The five seed Sigourney, 21-4 champions of the East Division of the South Iowa Cedar League, begin their State tournament run Monday with fellow SICL member, 26-3, undefeated champions of the West Division, No. 5 ranked Lynnville-Sully. The Hawks beat the Savages earlier this season 4-3.
Sigourney Baseball Makes First State Tournament Appearance Today On KCII
The wait is finally over for Sigourney baseball as the boys play in the program’s first-ever State Tournament game this afternoon. The Savages are set to face conference-rival Lynnville-Sully at Merchants Park in Carroll at 1:30 p.m. Sigourney enters the Quarterfinal round with the fifth seed and a 21-4 record. A win over Burlington Notre Dame last Tuesday punched the Savages’ ticket to the 2024 1A State Tournament.They join fellow qualifiers Lynnville-Sully, Akron-Westfield, Bedford, Newman Catholic, South Winneshiek, Remsen-St. Mary’s, and North Linn.
