Scott: Harris needs to ‘prove herself’ to voters

Barre, VT – Governor Phil Scott weighed in on President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place.

Governor Scott has recently said that he does not think President Biden or former president Donald Trump are fit for office, but needs to learn more about Vice President Harris’ views and policies before he makes up his mind on whether he can support her.

The Governor called Biden’s decision to drop out of the race “history in the making,” and the right decision for the country, but added that Harris needs to show Americans that she deserves their votes and make up for a lack of action during her time as vice president.

“The Vice President in this administration hasn’t been as visible as others that I’ve seen in recent history, whether it was Vice President Pence or Vice President Biden. They took a more visible role,” Scott said. “I think she needs to prove herself and tell us — tell Americans how she’s going to deal with inflation, the affordability of the nation, the border, how she’s going to unite the country.”

Scott noted that Harris needs to convince moderate voters of her worthiness in addition to Democrats, and said she will likely need votes from outside her party to win the presidency.

“This is a fast forward of the primary system, she has got to convince the Democrats first that she’s the right choice,” Scott continued. “Democrats aren’t going to be able to elect her, it’s going to be I think Independents, those in the middle that are going to make the decision as to who becomes the next president.”

Scott supported Biden in the last presidential election, but withheld an endorsement this year. The Governor has often voiced his disdain for Trump, and confirmed that he will not be supporting the former president.

It is unclear who Scott will endorse, but he said he hopes to see a candidate who will unite Americans and make the country more affordable.
