"Oxford American" literary magazine centers annual Southern Music issue on Memphis
CONWAY, Ark. - The Oxford American literary magazine has announced that its 26th annual Southern Music Issue will center on the artists and sounds of Memphis. "The Oxford American has a long tradition of reporting on the vibrant musical ecosystem of Memphis. This winter, we're devoting an entire issue to the topic," they said in a release. "The 2024 edition of our annual Southern Music Issue features an in-depth exploration of the Tennessee city and its surrounding region, fertile ground that has arguably cultivated more genres than anyplace else in America: rock & roll, soul, Memphis rap, garage-punk, the blues, and numerous others."
I ate my way through Memphis and found so much more than barbecue
A city in flux, the old and new co-exist in gritty, neon-filled Memphis. That’s especially evident in the food scene. One of Memphis’s hottest new restaurants is in a century-old machine shop downtown. Picturing a kitchen in place of a carport is something “a lot of people could not imagine,” says Dewayne Gammel, owner of Renovate Memphis, yet he’s recently worked closely with Liles to do just that. “Most people can’t envision something that’s not there. It’s different when you do a refreshed kitchen, or something where a kitchen’s already there. You’re putting in new countertops, new cabinets, whatever. But to put one in that didn’t exist before, it’s hard for people to envision it.”
