Early voting in Barton County set to begin on Wednesday
For all intents and purposes, many local elections are determined in the primary election. This year's Republican and Democratic primary elections are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6. In-person voting in Kansas may begin as early as July 17, and Barton County Clerk Bev Schmeidler said her office plans to be open for voting that morning.

Great Bend Economic Development Receives Grant Funds from the Patterson Family Foundation for IGNITE Innovation Center Project
GREAT BEND, Kan. — Great Bend Economic Development (GBED) is pleased to announce the receipt of $394,000 from the Patterson Family Foundation Thriving Rural Grant program. The grant funds will allow GBED to purchase equipment and furnishings for the IGNITE Innovation Center, a multi-purpose community facility that will provide essential resources to the Barton County area.
Barton Co. Sheriff considers many variables when planning budget
Budget season is underway for local taxing entities. One goal is to remain revenue neutral - or collect no more dollars than the year before. Barton County was revenue neutral in 2022, and actually collected less tax dollars in 2023 than in 2022. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the plan going forward is to help the county remain revenue neutral but it's not always easy.

Wake up central Kansas
The Sip and Solar meeting at the brewery in Great Bend stated that there would be little if any environmental effect on Cheyenne Bottoms. There needs to be a comprehensive study on the impact of a large solar farm on the Central Kansas Flyway. Permits to allow this to be done two miles south of the Bottoms needs to stipulate that a study be done to know what will happen to the migratory birds.

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, July 9 shows a little over half the state now totally out of drought conditions. None of the state is in extreme or exception drought. Barton County is ranges from a little abnormally dry conditions with mostly moderate drought. Part of the area northwest of Barton County is in severe drought as is the area of Reno, Sedgwick, and Harvey Counties. The six to ten-day outlook (July 16 to 20) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of likely above normal temperatures and leaning 33 to 40% chance above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (July 18 to 24) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. No great for dryland soybeans and corn kernel development. Fortunately, much of the area’s corn, especially east of US 281 has pollinated.
2 hospitalized after motorcycles collide in Barton County
BARTON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Saturday in Barton County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Harley Davidson FLS Series Motorcycle driven by Ben E. Newell, 70, Hudson, was southbound on U.S. 281 three miles north of U.S. 56 in a group of motorcycles.
