The Los Angeles Lakers head coach search was one of the most popular topics of the 2024 NBA offseason. After making a huge play for Dan Hurley and coming up short, they pivoted to JJ Redick and ended up giving him his first head coaching job.
Redick's hire was certainly divisive, as many believe he had an inside track to landing the job thanks to his friendship with LeBron James . And based on his recent tirade, it doesn't seem like Kwame Brown is a very big fan of the Lakers' decision to hire JJ.
Kwame blasts Redick
Brown played for two-and-a-half seasons with the Lakers during his time in the NBA, so obviously, he's going to keep an eye on them to see how they fare each season. It's very clear, though, that he is not a fan of JJ.
In a long tirade he posted on his YouTube channel, Kwame took aim at Redick, calling him an alcoholic and questioning how he got his job. The former #1 pick claims this is something everyone knows and that teams could simply bribe the former Duke Blue Devil with alcohol if they want to beat the Lakers.
"This is how the other teams gonna beat the Lakers," Kwame said on Youtube. "They gonna say, 'JJ, oh JJ… let's have a beer contest.' This is how every team is gonna whoop the Lakers a**, they gonna be handing JJ beers and s*** on the low. This son of a b**** drunk. JJ, I heard you can throw 'em back. Me and you could have a beer contest, I like Bud Light too you druggy motherf***er. How come Malika Andrews ain't talk about your drunken a**?"
"N**** gonna be handing your a** beer in the water bottles on the sideline. We know you like to throw 'em back. You one of them drunk a** white boys that will take off your clothes and go streaking. JJ, you a partying-a** white boy…' Do you wanna throw the game? Take LeBron out, I got a beer for you," Brown added.

Kwame leaves fans everywhere scratching their heads
Many fans likely won't understand where these accusations are coming from, as Redick had a successful career in the NBA before transitioning into the world of sports media. If JJ was an alcoholic, he probably wouldn't have been able to do any of that.
Redick was charged with driving under the influence back in 2006 during his time at Duke, but he managed to get his act together after that. Aside from that, there's really no indication that Redick is an alcoholic, and this incident happened nearly 20 years ago.
Brown has gone on absurd rants before, and this appears to be another one on the list. It will be interesting to see how JJ's first season goes with the Lakers, but it looks like Kwame is hoping he will fail. This almost certainly isn't going to register on Redick's radar, but maybe if L.A. wins the 2025 NBA Finals, he'll give the former big man a nice shoutout for this tirade.
