"Frequently it was heated" — Steve Kerr claims Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen's conversations in practice usually had tension

As leaders of the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen had many conversations during practice, whether about the triangle offense or defensive schemes.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr witnessed these lengthy talks between the two legends. From his observation, Jordan and Pippen's discussions were often heated, but always for a good cause.

"There was always a lot of communication between Michael and Scottie, and frequently it was heated," Kerr said, per ESPN . " But never disrespectful. It was always with the intention of trying to win."

Perhaps this is what a well-oiled machine looks like: two leaders jawing at it in almost every practice, but they never take it personally.

Jordan and Pippen are the ultimate professionals, which means they treat each other with utmost respect. Sure, they may disagree on some tactical things, but at the end of the day, they are comrades in battle.

Besides, the team is more important than their egos. During these heated debates, Jordan and Pippen might have been tempted to lash out at one another. But they compose themselves knowing that they are the leaders of the squad. Ten other guys rely on them for guidance.

The perfect complement

According to Kerr, what made the Pippen-Jordan work was that the two Bulls icons were perfect complements to each other. While MJ was the tough cookie, Pip was the softer and calmer one.

"He was a perfect complement to Michael," Kerr said. "Michael was the hard-ass. You had to be ready every day for his criticism. Scottie would put his arm around you and make sure you were OK. He is a kind soul."

This excellent comment from Kerr completes the picture painted in the sports documentary "The Last Dance." The critically acclaimed series heavily focused on MJ and his tyrannical behavior towards his teammates. From the looks of it, the rest of the Bulls players operated in fear of Mike's wrath.

But this tactic can only last so long. At some point, Jordan's teammates would've fought back or, worse, refused to cooperate. Before they reached their breaking point, Scottie would approach them and offer words of comfort. This would calm their nerves and revert their focus to the task.
