Pure escapism, just when we need it, “White Christmas” at MSMT. If there was ever a time when we needed to hark back to a sweeter time, it is now. MSMT has transformed the Pickard Theater into a wonderland, complete with a Christmas market for early shopping and trees around every corner. There are vendors and even live music at intermission.
Bigelow celebrates 50th anniversary with return of Café Sci series
Few people are as uniquely positioned to tell the story of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences’ (BLOS) first 50 years as Dr. Barney Balch, and on July 16, to a crowd of about 160 at the Opera House of Boothbay Harbor, he did. Combining his personal history with the laboratory and research gleaned from 50 years’ worth of Bigelow annual reports, Balch inaugurated the 2024 Café Sci series with a look back on Bigelow’s legacy in “Celebrating the Past, Solving for the Future.”
John Vander: ‘Postcards From Sicily’
New works on paper by John Vander at Gold/Smith Gallery July 29 to Sept. 18. Said Vander, “This is a visual remembrance of a short trip to the island of Sicily this year in January. The classical and baroque share a loving cup of the local wine. Everything was very different from Tuscany. The sky was a deeper clearer blue, the sea a transparent turquoise and all the colors seemed to be electrified. Arriving at night, the half moon rising over the sea, heading to Mount Etna from Catania Airport, with its curve parallel to the sea was a profound and magical preface of things to come. I returned to Tuscany and began painting this new and extremely colorful experience.

Maine state trooper injured after cruiser rear-ended during traffic stop
A Maine state trooper is recovering after he was rear-ended by another vehicle during a highway traffic stop on Saturday night, authorities said.The cruiser that Trooper Patrick Flanagan was in spun around and hit the vehicle he had pulled over. Flanagan and the two other drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Maine State Police said in a news release.Flanagan's emergency lights were activated on the southbound Maine Turnpike in Biddeford when his cruiser was struck, police said.Flanagan and the 25-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck his were taken to hospitals. The driver was issued a summons.The circumstances that led up to the crash are under investigation, police said.It was the third vehicle crash into a state police cruiser within 48 hours, according to police reports.The other two crashes happened in Gardiner and Gouldsboro, CBS affiliate WGME reported. There were no injuries in the other two.
