EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Five people were rescued after their kayaks overturned on the Kalamazoo River near Battle Creek Saturday evening, police say.

The Emmett Township Police Department says officers responded to the 13000 block of D Dr. N near 11 Mile/Wheatfield Road around 7:30 p.m. on a report of five overturned kayaks.

The police department said a man and woman, along with three children, were on the Kalamazoo River when their kayaks got caught up in trees and the current, causing them to flip over.

Police launched a rescue boat and helped the group out of the water. No one was hurt.

The Emmett Township Police Department is urging people to stay off of the river, telling News 8 that with the recent rain and flood conditions, the Kalamazoo River can be dangerous. The police department said the water is running very quickly and there’s a lot of debris like trees that can cause boats to tip over.
