Local mom, daughter bring popular American Southwest drink options to Battle Ground

Dirty sodas have made a splash in Battle Ground thanks to a mom and daughter opening Over Ice Soda and Beverages, recently.

The grand opening on June 22 led to long lines but customers took to reviews to say the wait was worth it. Each day since opening, Over Ice has had a consistent crowd of thirsty customers eagerly waiting to try a fountain soda with added flavors, also known as dirty sodas.

“So it’s kind of a Utah thing. If people know what a dirty soda is, they’re probably familiar with Utah or TikTok culture because it’s very popular on TikTok and just on social media in general,” Over Ice owner Madison Olson said.

Olson said her family travels south to Arizona every year and enjoys a soda shop chain called Swig. Every time they enjoyed a swig of Swig’s dirty sodas, Olson said they thought about bringing the business concept to Washington. After many years, their dreams of bringing a dirty soda shop to Battle Ground came true.

Olson and her mom, Katie Isaacson Questad, opened up the soda shop at the former site of Tribe Coffee in Battle Ground’s old town district. But their dream started with the idea to open a cart. Due to the logistics and uncertainty of maintaining a soda cart, they decided a small soda shop was a better idea.

When customers lined up on opening day, Olson felt her dream was coming true.

“We were shocked because we were sitting at Tukes across the street the night before with my friends setting up, and I was so scared, thinking no one’s going to come,” Olson said, adding that videos about Over Ice were popular on TikTok, but she didn’t think they gained a local following. “We had prepared for a lot, though. We literally ran out of ice within the first two hours.”

The rush of customers on the first day allowed Olson and her crew to work kinks out and be better prepared for their first full week of operation, she said.

The menu features many drink options that are not the average fountain soda, including create-your-own and drinks outside of fountain soda. Drink names pay homage to local places like the Brush Prairie Girl, made from Diet Dr. Pepper, strawberry and sweet cream, and Sunset Falls, with Sprite loaded with lemonade, pineapple, mango, strawberry and fresh lemon. One drink name stands out particularly in Battle Ground.

“Our No. 1 menu item, if you’re from Battle Ground, you probably know who the dancing lady is,” Olson said. “I got her permission to name a drink after her: That one is Sprite, strawberry, vanilla and vanilla cream, and that is our most popular menu item.”

Once summer turns to fall and people start craving hot drinks again, Olson said they will offer ciders, chai drinks, hot chocolates and possibly even espressos, in addition to the cold dirty sodas.

Over Ice is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, at 209 E. Main St., Suite 143, in Battle Ground. It is closed Mondays. Over Ice can be followed on Facebook and Instagram under the company name.
