BAY MINETTE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Former Coastal Alabama Community College point guard, 20-year-old Latrell Sanders was killed in a car crash Tuesday morning.

Sanders was driving in Okaloosa County on I-10 when the car left the road and hit a tree. His coaches said the community is heartbroken by the news.

“Just a terrible loss at such a young, young age for an unbelievable person,” Head Basketball Coach Robby Robertson said.

Sanders played for the Coyotes for two years until he graduated this spring. He recently moved back home to Florida and was hoping to walk onto a bigger team this fall to continue his basketball career.

“He was always positive. There was never a negative moment with him. You know, if things were going bad off the floor, you never knew it because he was so positive and he always had a smile on his face,” Coach Robertson said.

Coach Robertson said that ever since his freshman year, Sanders was always known to be a leader on and off the court by the entire team.

“Because of his personality, because of his high character. He was a really good leader for our program,” Coach Robertson said.

Coach Robertson said the team is devastated by the news of losing one of their own. He said Sander’s treated his team more like family.

“His teams here over the last two years, they were a brotherhood. You know, you hear that a lot, but they really were a brotherhood. And a lot of that was because of Latrell and because of the way that he lived his life off the floor.”

Coach Robertson said the team will honor Sanders this season by continuing to play the game he loved.
