10 Squared Women Of Guthrie County Donates Over $14,000 To Stuart PD Community Programs

The 10 Squared Women of Guthrie County recently presented their second-quarter donation to the Stuart Police Department Community Programs (SPDCP). The decision to support the group was made during the group’s May 28 meeting in Panora. Following presentations from three local organizations, the group announced their $14,400 total. SPDCP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit incorporated in 2022 that focuses on improving relationships between law enforcement and the community through outreach, education, and youth activities. Their programs include Books & Badges, Bicycle Rodeo, National Donut Day, Summer Youth Programs, National Night Out, Shop with A Cop, and many others. Sgt. Katie Guisinger says, “Funding for community programming and youth activities can sometimes be hard to come by, and this donation will allow SPDCP to not only enhance our current programming but also to expand with new programming.” Since its creation in 2017, the 10 Squared Women of Guthrie County has donated $343,050 to various local projects. Emerald Ash Borers have killed a lot of the trees that have stood for decades at Linduska Field and adjacent Allensworth Field in Jefferson. Greene County Activities Director Dave Wright talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the removal project. “There’s not going to be nearly the shade and beauty those trees provided at Linduska and Allensworth Fields. Our maintenance crews have been cutting down the trees, so that project continues, along with stump removal.”

An annual August event in Jefferson hits its first deadline today. Cruisin’ to the Square is August 8th from 4:30-7pm and features classic and modern cars, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles. Jefferson Matters Executive Director Matt Wetrich says the downtown square is filled with lots of vehicles and there are several awards that are announced, including Best Car, Truck, Tractor, and Motorcycle; Best Paint, Engine, Interior, Original/Unrestored, and Most Likely To Get A Ticket.
Mannel hired as ISU Extension regional director
Lori Mannel of Jefferson has accepted the position of regional director for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach serving Carroll, Greene, Boone and Guthrie counties in central Iowa. As regional director, Mannel will provide administrative leadership to county extension office staff and guidance to county extension councils. Mannel was most recently the county director for ISU Extension and Outreach Greene County. Mannel earned her bachelor’s degree in business management from Buena Vista University, Storm Lake.
Guthrie Center Hospital Shares Report on Economic Impact and Benefits
The Guthrie Center Hospital recently shared the results from a study done by the Iowa Hospital Association. GCH supported 431 local jobs in Guthrie County in 2023, adding $18.9 million to the County’s economy. According to the study, the number of jobs provided was 13.2 percent of jobs in the County, with the $18.9 million in wages accounting for 11.4 percent of all wages in the County. The hospital also had $36 million in total expenditures, accounting for 7.1 percent of Guthrie County’s gross domestic product, and brought in $527,800 in community benefits. The data used in the study is compiled from hospital submitted data turned in to the American Hospital Association AHA through their annual survey of hospitals. The AHA survey shows that Iowa hospitals employed 137,841 employees in 2023, provided over $9 billion in wages and accounted for over $21.3 billion of Iowa’s gross domestic product.
Greene Co Historical Society to Explore Unique History of Russell Park in Jefferson
Following the Greene County Fair earlier this month, the Greene County Historical Society is picking up its normal monthly programs again. August’s program takes place Friday, August 2nd at Central Christian Church in Jefferson about the history of Russell Park in Jefferson. The presenter will be Mikki Schwartzkopf and she will talk about how the 20-lot land was a swamp before the landowner, Judge JJ Russell gave the property to the city in 1901. The swamp was drained in 1903 and an Omaha landscape architect did the design and planting of the then new park.
Guthrie Center City Council Postpones Public Hearing
The Guthrie Center City Council met in regular session Monday night. The Council approved fencing permits on the 100 block of North 12th Street and 900 block of North 13th Street, appointed Lacquerisha Hall to the Mary J Barnett Memorial Library Board, and heard from Mark and Derrik Bauer of Tri-County Lumber on a housing project. The Board then postponed a public hearing on the proposed sale of City owned real estate at 907 Main Street until August 12th, and approved a resolution authorizing the destruction of certain records from fiscal year 2018-19 per Iowa Code.
Bagley Public Library Searching for Donations for Highway 141 Sales
The Bagley Public Library is preparing for the annual Highway 141 Fundraiser Sale. The fundraiser takes place in towns along Highway 141. The library is accepting donations of clean used books and miscellaneous items like household items, bags and much more. They won’t be accepting clothing and large items like furniture and TV’s. Donations of these items will be accepted from now until July 31st. Baked goods and produce will also be accepted on August 1st from 1-6pm, or beginning at 8am on August 2nd. Public Voting for Favorite Ring Out for Art Sculpture in Jefferson Ends Soon
Time is running out for public voting of this year’s entries for the Ring Out for Art contest in Jefferson. There are four sculptures that are on display on the south side of the Greene County Courthouse and Jefferson Matters Executive Director Matt Wetrich encourages anyone who hasn’t voted for their favorite sculpture to do it.
