Phone policies, enforcement delay Cobre handbooks
Discussions about student cell phone use in the Cobre Consolidated Schools dominated the Board of Education’s meeting Monday night, and while district administrators encouraged no change in the policy, the board voted to approve only the elementary-level student/parent handbook, postponing approval of handbooks for other grade levels until their next meeting.
Hospital opens new delivery unit
The delivery was delayed somewhat, but Gila Regional Medical Center opened its new Women and Newborn Services Unit with a baby shower-themed opening Wednesday. The completion of the project, funded by $2 million in capital outlay from the state, was delayed somewhat by plan revision approvals, but it will be open for patients on Friday, said Jasmine Parra, director of the unit. Construction on renovations to the former Maternal Child Department started in January.
More Little Walnut work on the way
The next phase of improvements to Little Walnut Road will get underway in about a month, thanks to a bid awarded by the Silver City Town Council at their meeting Tuesday. The council voted to award phase four of the Little Walnut project to Deming Excavating Inc. for $2.9 million, which includes a little more than $223,000 in gross receipts taxes to be paid by the town.

The nonprofit organization “Fight Like a Girl” will be having a free Narcan training class this Saturday, July 27th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Silver City Recreation Center. The training will be presented by someone in recovery who has real life experience that will take a deep dive into the pharmacological mechanisms of opioids and how Naloxone works, how it can be misused and the effects it can have on an individual.

Silver Consolidated Schools will be having a “Back to Pool Days” pool party this evening, July 26th. Come join them as they say farewell to summer with a pool party for all Silver Schools families with free food, drinks and music. Bring your favorite float devices and any outside food you’d like. Lifeguards will be on duty to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time. The pool party will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Silver City Municipal Pool and has a 250 person limit, so arriving early is recommended.
