Captor of Billy the Kid Tombstone to be Dedicated in Raton
Tombstone of a Captor of Billy the Kid to be Dedicated at Raton, New Mexico. The Wild West History Association (WWHA) is pleased to announce the completed installation of a grave marker for Frank Stewart (alias of John Wallace Green) in Raton, New Mexico. Stewart was the co-leader, with Pat Garrett, of the posse that captured Billy the Kid and his small group of cohorts at Stinking Spring, east of Fort Sumner, on December 23, 1880.
Raton Receives $500,000 EPA Grant to Assess Pollution at 3 Business Sites
WASHINGTON — $1 million in grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were recently announced and awarded to Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) and the City of Ratón. This funding was made possible through the Infrastructure Law, which was passed by the N.M. Congressional Delegation, U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján, and U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández.

Albuquerque's homeless crisis amid housing shortages, rising rent
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Video above: New Mexico's Homeless Coalition point-in-time count report shows an increase in homelessness over a three-year span in Albuquerque. The point-in-time count report reveals 1,152 people experienced homelessness in 2021 compared to 1,311 in 2022—a 13.8% increase from the year before. In 2023, the report revealed 2,394 people experienced homelessness, which more than doubled its original numbers with an 83% increase from 2022. 2024's report is not available.

The Aztec Police Department will get a boost when reserve officers enter the force through a new program approved in June by the City Commission. The program, which will begin in earnest next month, is designed to supplement present police ability with trained volunteers, explained Police Chief Bill Smith Sr. Applications for the reserve are now being taken by the police department and program coordinator Officer Richard Mahan. Qualifications include being a resident of Aztec, being at least 21 years of age and having a record clear of any felony arrest or any misdemeanor arrests that may fall under “moral turpitude.”
