BAYONNE, NJ -  The Bayonne NAACP celebrated Juneteenth with a festival at G. Thomas DiDomenico Park on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

While a number of elected officials and community leaders, including Mayor Jimmy Davis, were in attendance, it was the performers throughout the day that made the event special.

Among those was Doc Watson, a well-known jazz musician, who at one point gripped his saxophone and jokingly told the audience that people would have to drag him kicking from the stage to keep him from performing.

He was mostly kidding and eventually vacated the stage to make way for one of the local poets

The Bayonne branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) celebrated Juneteenth for the first time officially in 2022 on the first anniversary of Juneteenth becoming a federal national holiday commemorating the day in 1865 Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas alerting residents there that slavery had ended.

The event featured musical entertainment from a variety of genres including jazz, rap and spoken word. DJ Will and DJ Foxy Jo both got the crowd dancing while featured artist Lance Bryant and the Lance Bryant Jazz Quartet brought energy and talent to the stage making the event even more memorable.
