So with the College Football Playoff field about to triple in size from four to 12 teams, how will the preseason poll do as a playoff predictor? To get an idea, AP compared the preseason rankings from 2014-23 to the final CFP rankings from those years. By College Sports Writer Ralph D. Russo. SENT: 700 words, photos.

    OLY--PARIS OLYMPICS TAKEAWAYS

PARIS -- There's no such thing as an apolitical Olympics, and that was clear from the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. The two-week sporting spectacle became part of the U.S. political discourse from the very start over criticism that began with the opening ceremony, carried into a gender misconceptions debate and was the target of a Russian disinformation attack. By National Writer Jenna Fryer. SENT: 1,000 words, photos.

    OLY--LOS ANGELES 2028

LOS ANGELES — As the Olympics close in Paris, Los Angeles will take the torch. The city will become the third city to host the games three times as it adds 2028 to the locally legendary years of 1932 and 1984. Los Angeles and Paris were originally rivals for the 2024 games before the International Olympic Committee called it a tie and awarded successive games to each. Los Angeles will take advantage of a stadium and arena boom in recent decades and will do more polishing than building in the next four years. From gridlock to homelessness, the city has numerous hurdles to clear before the games, but work on infrastructure improvements are already in the works. By Andrew Dalton and Jaimie Ding. CAR—NASCAR-CHAOTIC FINISH

Austin Dillon won for the first time in nearly two years in the NASCAR Cup Series. The race seemed out of reach before he spun Joey Logano out of the way and then sent Denny Hamlin into the wall as well. That all happened in the final few seconds at Richmond on Sunday night. Once the initial celebration ended, Dillon had quite a bit to answer for. By Noah Trister. SENT: 700 words, photos.

    FBN--NEW KICKOFF

The first full weekend of exhibition games featuring the new dynamic kickoff featured two long returns, a significant drop in touchbacks and mass confusion on an odd play that ended up as a rare safety. By Pro Football Writer Josh Dubow. SENT: 900 words, photos.

    SOC--ENGLAND-SEASON PREVIEW

Manchester City is bidding for a five-peat in the Premier League to extend a reign of dominance never seen before in the 136-year history of England's top division. Whatever happens in a title race that could again involve Arsenal, it promises to be a tumultuous season for the champions because City manager Pep Guardiola has entered the final year of his deal and the club is set to discover if it will be punished after being hit with 115 charges for breaking financial rules.
