    Hundreds gather to honor fallen Delaware firefighter

    ELLENDALE – Hundreds of first responders assembled Thursday to honor the volunteer firefighter and EMS logistics technician Thomas W. Berry III who passed away in the line of duty while on the scene of a motor vehicle collision near Georgetown. on Aug. 13.

    The memorial service began at Crossroad Community Church west of Georgetown, where family, friends and members of the community paid their respects. The service included full firefighter honors.

    Following the service, many emergency services units escorted the casket from the church to Georgetown Fire Company, Sussex County EMS offices and the Ellendale Fire Company. This included the ceremonial rite to answer Mr. Berry’s “final alarm.”

    Interment followed at the Ellendale Cemetery where he was laid to rest.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Berry’s memory be made to any local fire company. In addition, letters of condolences to the family or grieving agencies can be sent to 21911 Rudder Lane in Georgetown.
