In time for fall, scarecrows will hang around Georgetown

GEORGETOWN — Signs of autumn will be displayed downtown in late September.

Each year, the nonprofit Georgetown Arts & Flowers decorates the heart of town with scarecrows created by area businesses for advertising purposes.

Any establishment, agency or nonprofit in the 19947 ZIP code is eligible, by emailing for registration at scare22crows@yahoo.com.

The decorations will be up from late September through October on utility poles on East Market and South Bedford streets.

Debby Quinn, chair of the initiative, said passersby “love it,” adding that, as of Wednesday, there were 14 entrants.

Space is limited, so organizations must register by Tuesday.

The rules are as follows:

• An entrant must use the wooden T-form provided by Georgetown Arts & Flowers.
• The name of the scarecrow creator must be on the plastic board, which is also provided.
• No fresh produce or items of any value may be used.
• Each entry must be durable, as the scarecrows will be cable-tied to poles.
• Georgetown Arts & Flowers has the right to eliminate any scarecrow that does not fit a family-oriented theme.
