    Roundup: Dover football team falls in season opener

    Dover High managed only a first-half field goal in falling to Troy, Pa., 8-3, in its football season opener on Saturday night.

    The contest was played at Wilmington’s Abessinio Stadium as part of the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic.

    Kole Turner made a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter for the Senators, who were playing their first game under coach Maurice Paulk.

    Troy (2-0), which scored 84 points in its opener a week ago, took the lead on a touchdown and two-point conversion in the second quarter.

    The Senators host Canarsie, N.Y. on Friday at 6 p.m. in their home opener.

    Sussex Tech 56, Glasgow 34: The Ravens came out with the victory in the high-scoring season opener on Saturday morning.

    Delmar 49, Dickinson 6: The Wildcats scored all of their points in the first half before registering the season-opening road victory on Friday.

    Downingtown West, Pa. 42, Smyrna 6: The Eagles fell to the Whippets in their football season opener on Friday night.

    The Whippets led 28-6 at halftime before pulling the game out of reach in the third quarter.

    Smyrna hosts defending Class 3A state champion Salesianum on Friday night in its first home game of the season.

    Milford 20, Mt. Pleasant 6: Greg Lockett scored all three touchdowns for the Buccaneers in their road victory on Friday.

    Milford led 7-0 at halftime before downing the Green Knights in its second-straight season opener.The Bucs next play on Sept. 13 when they host William Penn.

    Lake Forest 18, Odessa 14: The Spartans scored 12 unanswered second-half points to pull out the win on Thursday.

    It was the second-straight year that Lake Forest has opened the season with a victory over the Ducks. The Spartans host Caesar Rodney on Friday night.

    Cape Henlopen 21, Red Lion Christian 13: The Vikings built a 14-point halftime lead before posting the season-opening victory on Thursday night.

    Cape Henlopen doesn’t play again until Sept. 14 when it goes to Delcastle for an 11 a.m. contest.

    Sussex Central 41, Laurel 20: The Golden Knights ran off the contest’s last 21 points to break a 20-20 tie and pick up the victory.

    Five players scored touchdowns for Central led by Malik Bell with two. A nine-yard scoring run by William Harmon in the third quarter gave the Knights the lead for good.

    Quarterback Bradley Chavez ran for a touchdown and threw a 45-yard sciring pass to Josiah Johnson.

    Tate Walls scored twice for the Bulldogs, including one TD on an 89-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. He also tied the contest on a six-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

    Woodbridge 38, Seaford 0: Tyler Eley ran for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Blue Raiders’ win on Thursday.

    Kam’Ren Johnson added 77 yards and a TD on eight carries for Woodbridge, which scored all 38 of its points in the first half.

    Noah Jackson made eight tackles in the Raiders’ shutout.

    First State Military 62, AI DuPont 12: The Bulldogs cruised to the season-opening victory on Thursday.

    First State Military, which made the DIAA state tournament for the first time a year ago, hosts Wilmington Charter on Friday at 4 p.m.

    Delaware Military 57, Early College 0: The Seahawks put 42 first-quarter points before blanking the Hornets on Thursday.
