MIAMI (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list Thursday because of a kidney infection.

Hays has not played since Aug. 28. He was with the Phillies during their road series in Toronto before returning to Philadelphia for additional tests.

“Obviously, I’m not a doctor but they’re telling me that it’s hard to tell how long it takes,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Thursday before the club opened a four-game series in Miami against the Marlins. “We thought that originally, 48 hours of antibiotics would have a chance to knock it out, but it just didn’t.”

Thomson added that Hays has not improved with the initial medication treatment.

“We want to make sure we know what’s going on,” Thomson said.

The 29-year-old Hays was acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache on July 26. In 19 games with the Phillies, Hays is hitting .269 with one homer and five RBIs.

It is Hays’ second stint on the injured list since he joined the Phillies. Hays was sidelined 13 games last month because of a strained hamstring.

The seven-year veteran earned an American League All-Star nod last season.

Philadelphia recalled outfielder Cal Stevenson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill Hays’ spot on the roster. The move is retroactive to Monday.

The NL East-leading Phillies began Thursday seven games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.
