A fatal accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck has been reported after the vehicle veered-off the road for 'unknown reasons' before catching fire, leaving a Texas man dead and succumbing to his burns.

The tragedy marks the first known deadly crash of Elon Musk 's most recent electric pickup , which has yet to undergo independent crash tests.

Tesla has a strong track record with safety in its vehicle lineup, and the company is confident that the Cybertruck, described as exceptionally durable, will uphold this tradition.

Recent reports suggest that the Cybertruck has become a leading model in electric pickup truck sales in the U.S., with between 15,000 and 20,000 units on the road and a monthly sales rate of about 1,754.

Despite some prior crashes involving the Cybertruck, this is the first recorded fatal incident. The accident occurred early on Monday, August 6, around 1:45 a.m. in Baytown, Texas. According to Texas state troopers, the Cybertruck veered off Fisher Road near the Grand Parkway and collided with a concrete culvert. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, resulting in extensive damage.

The driver of the Cybertruck was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to severe burns and the extensive fire damage, authorities have not been able to identify the driver or retrieve key details such as the license plate and VIN. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
