“After careful consideration, I decided it is time for me to embark on the next chapter of my life and explore new opportunities and experiences,” the letter states.
The letter also states that Deputy Chief John Resek will assume the role of acting chief of police.
The I-Team also obtained a letter the mayor sent to department directors informing them of the retirement, calling McLaughlin “an invaluable leader and dedicated public servant.”
McLaughlin released the following statement to the I-Team:
“I am retiring from my long and successful career in law enforcement. I started as a patrol officer in Cleveland Heights and worked my way up to Chief of Police at the Cleveland Metroparks and now Beachwood. My decision to retire was not an easy decision, and I want to thank Mayor Berns for all his support. However, after serving as a Chief of Police for a total of 6 years, I feel like I have achieved everything I can in law enforcement and reached my maximum potential. I am excited about my future and new opportunities in the private sector.”
